About

Al Jalali Fort is another formidable Portuguese fort, built in the 16th century, standing majestically on the eastern side of Muscat Harbor. It was constructed around the same time as Al Mirani Fort, forming a crucial defensive pair for the city. Historically, Al Jalali Fort served as a prison, but today it is primarily used for hosting state functions and ceremonies. Like its counterpart, it is not open to the general public, but its exterior is well-maintained and impressive. Visitors can view the fort from the Muttrah Corniche or by taking a boat trip around the harbor. Its dramatic location atop a rocky outcrop provides stunning photographic opportunities and a glimpse into Oman's rich maritime and colonial history.
