About

The Bridge of Sighs is an iconic covered bridge connecting the Third Court of St John's College with New Court across the River Cam. It is one of Cambridge's most famous landmarks. Built in 1831, its design is strikingly similar to the original Bridge of Sighs in Venice, after which it is named, though its purpose was merely to connect two parts of the college rather than a prison. Often viewed from a punt on the river or from the grounds of St John's College, it is a popular photographic spot and a highlight of any visit.
