Capela de São João Batista (Igreja de São Roque)

The Chapel of Saint John the Baptist, located within the Church of São Roque in Lisbon, is considered one of the most extravagant and opulent examples of European Baroque art. Commissioned in the 18th century by King John V of Portugal, it was entirely constructed in Rome using the finest materials available, including lapis lazuli, alabaster, precious marbles, and gemstones. After its completion in Rome, the chapel was meticulously disassembled, shipped to Lisbon, and reassembled in its current location. Its intricate design features exquisite mosaics, rich gilding, and detailed sculptures, depicting scenes from the life of Saint John the Baptist. The craftsmanship and the sheer cost of its construction made it one of the most expensive chapels ever built. Visitors can marvel at its dazzling interior, which stands in stark contrast to the relatively sober facade of the São Roque Church.
