About

The Citadel is a formidable fortress situated atop Gellért Hill, offering the most breathtaking panoramic views of Budapest. It was built by the Habsburgs after the 1848-49 Hungarian Revolution to assert control. Although its primary purpose was military, today it is a popular tourist destination. The Liberation Monument, commemorating Soviet liberation during WWII, stands prominently before it. Visitors can enjoy sweeping vistas of the Danube, all the major bridges, the Parliament, Buda Castle, and the entire city skyline, making the uphill climb well worth the effort.
