Compass Point

Compass Point, locally known as 'The Pepper Pot,' is a distinctive octagonal storm tower perched atop the cliffs overlooking Bude's rugged coastline in Cornwall, UK. Built in 1835 by the local harbourmaster, it was designed to provide shelter and a vantage point from which to observe shipping and the notoriously unpredictable Atlantic weather. This iconic Grade II listed building is one of only two remaining structures of its kind in the country, featuring eight compass points carved into its stone base, aligning with true north. These carvings were historically used by sailors for navigational reference. Today, Compass Point serves as a beloved landmark and a popular spot for visitors and locals alike. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of Summerleaze Beach, the historic Bude Sea Pool, across the town, and out to the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. It's an ideal location for photography, reflection, or simply enjoying the dramatic coastal scenery. The walk to Compass Point is easily accessible from Bude town centre and forms part of the South West Coast Path, promising stunning coastal vistas along the way. While there are no facilities directly at the point, Bude town offers numerous amenities including cafes, shops, and public restrooms.
