About

The Santuário de Cristo Rei, or Sanctuary of Christ the King, is an imposing statue of Christ overlooking Lisbon, located on the south bank of the Tagus River in Almada. Inspired by Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer, it was inaugurated in 1959 as a symbol of gratitude for Portugal being spared from World War II. The statue itself stands on a tall pedestal, reaching a total height of 110 meters, making it a prominent landmark visible from almost anywhere in Lisbon. Visitors can take an elevator and then a short flight of stairs to a viewing platform at the base of the statue, which offers truly breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of Lisbon, the 25 de Abril Bridge, and the entire Tagus estuary. The site also includes a chapel, a gift shop, and peaceful gardens. A visit to Cristo Rei provides not only a spiritual experience but also a unique perspective on Lisbon's urban landscape and its stunning natural surroundings, accessible by ferry and bus from the city center.
