About

The Ghibli Museum in Mitaka is a magical place dedicated to the art and animation of Studio Ghibli, the renowned creators of beloved films like 'My Neighbor Totoro' and 'Spirited Away.' Designed by Hayao Miyazaki himself, the museum is deliberately whimsical and imaginative, feeling less like a traditional museum and more like a fantastical journey. Visitors can explore various exhibits showcasing the animation process, original artworks, and character designs. Highlights include a Catbus for children to play in, a replica of a Miyazaki-esque film set, and a fascinating look into the principles of animation. Photography is generally prohibited inside to encourage visitors to fully immerse themselves in the experience. A small cinema exclusively screens original short films not shown anywhere else, adding to the museum's unique charm. The rooftop garden, featuring a life-sized robot soldier from 'Castle in the Sky,' offers a peaceful retreat. Due to its immense popularity, tickets must be purchased in advance and often sell out quickly.
