About

Gokoku-ji Temple is a beautiful and historic Buddhist temple nestled in the Bunkyo district, known for its serene atmosphere and well-preserved Edo-period architecture. Founded in 1681 by the fifth Tokugawa Shogun, Tsunayoshi, it was built to enshrine his mother's spirit. Unlike many other temples in Tokyo, Gokoku-ji remarkably survived the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and the air raids of World War II, preserving its original main hall (Kannon-do) which is now designated as an Important Cultural Property. Its spacious grounds include a picturesque garden, various sub-temples, and a large graveyard where notable figures are interred. The temple offers a peaceful escape, allowing visitors to experience traditional Japanese temple architecture and a quiet spiritual ambiance.
