Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church

The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church stands as a powerful landmark in West Berlin, serving as a poignant reminder of the devastation of World War II and a symbol of peace and reconciliation. It famously comprises the ruined spire of the original 19th-century church, severely damaged by bombing in 1943. Adjacent to the 'hollow tooth' (the nickname for the old tower), a stunning modern octagonal church and hexagonal bell tower were consecrated in 1961. Designed by Egon Eiermann, the new structures are distinguished by their mesmerizing blue stained-glass windows, creating an ethereal light inside. The interior of the new church offers a serene space for contemplation, while the old tower's ground floor features an exhibition detailing the church's history and the wartime destruction.
