About

The Kyu-Iwasaki-Tei Gardens (Old Iwasaki Estate Garden) is a beautifully preserved mansion and gardens that once belonged to the Iwasaki family, the founders of the Mitsubishi conglomerate. Designed by Josiah Conder, a prominent British architect of the Meiji era, the estate offers a fascinating blend of Western and traditional Japanese architectural styles. The main Western-style residence is a magnificent example of Victorian architecture, featuring intricate details and luxurious interiors. Adjacent to it is a traditional Japanese-style house, providing a glimpse into the family's more private living spaces, and a billiard house, a unique Western-style building featuring a Swiss chalet design. The surrounding Japanese gardens, while smaller in scale than some other Tokyo gardens, are meticulously maintained and offer a peaceful setting. Visiting this estate provides a rare opportunity to step back in time and experience the opulent lifestyle of a powerful Meiji-era industrialist.
