About

The Lindwurmbrunnen is Klagenfurt's most iconic landmark, located in the Neuer Platz. This imposing stone statue depicts a fearsome dragon, a central figure in the city's founding legend, which tells of brave knights who slew the monster and reclaimed the land. Carved from a single block of chlorite schist in 1590, the dragon is a symbol of Klagenfurt's strength and heritage. Later, in 1624, a statue of Hercules, representing the hero who defeated the dragon, was added to the ensemble. Surrounded by historical buildings and vibrant city life, the Lindwurmbrunnen serves as a popular meeting point and a proud emblem of Klagenfurt, drawing visitors with its mythological allure.
