About

Meiji Jingu Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his consort, Empress Shoken. Completed in 1920, the shrine is nestled within a vast, serene forest covering 70 hectares in the heart of Shibuya, created from donated trees from all over Japan. The approach to the shrine through the giant torii gates and along the gravel paths offers a peaceful escape from the bustling city. The inner garden (Meiji Jingu Gyoen), famous for its iris garden and a teahouse, requires a small entrance fee. Visitors often come to pay their respects, witness traditional Shinto weddings, or simply enjoy the tranquil atmosphere and natural beauty. It's a profound cultural experience offering insight into Japan's imperial history and spiritual traditions.
