About

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT) is the first national art museum in Japan, established in 1952. It boasts an extensive collection primarily focusing on modern and contemporary Japanese art, tracing its development from the Meiji era (1868-1912) to the present day. MOMAT's permanent collection features over 13,000 works, including significant pieces by renowned Japanese artists such as Ryusei Kishida and Taikan Yokoyama, alongside a selection of Western art. The museum is celebrated for its chronological display, offering visitors a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of Japanese art through various historical and cultural contexts. Beyond its permanent collection, MOMAT regularly hosts temporary exhibitions that delve into specific artists, art movements, or themes, often drawing from international repertoires. The museum building itself is an architectural notable, located within walking distance of the Imperial Palace East Garden, making it an ideal cultural stop.
