Palacio de Justicia

The Palacio de Justicia, located on the northern side of Bogotá's historic Plaza de Bolívar, is a monumental edifice that serves as the seat of the Supreme Court of Justice of Colombia. Its imposing neoclassical architecture, with a grand facade and stately columns, makes it a prominent feature of the city's main square. The building stands as a symbol of the Colombian legal system and the rule of law. However, the Palacio de Justicia is perhaps most widely known for its tragic and pivotal role in Colombian history. In November 1985, the building was seized by the M-19 guerrilla group, leading to a bloody siege and a subsequent military recapture that resulted in the deaths of over 100 people, including 11 Supreme Court justices. Much of the original structure was destroyed and subsequently rebuilt. The current building, inaugurated in 1998, carefully reconstructs the original design while incorporating modern enhancements. Visitors can appreciate its architectural grandeur from the outside, reflecting on the building's tumultuous past and its enduring significance to Colombian society. While public access to the interior is generally restricted to official business, its exterior presence and historical weight are undeniable attractions in the heart of Bogotá.
