About

Parc de la Ciutadella is one of Barcelona's most cherished green spaces, offering a vibrant oasis in the heart of the city. Established on the site of a former military citadel, it became the city's first public park in the mid-19th century and was the main site for the 1888 Universal Exhibition. This expansive park is a popular spot for both locals and tourists seeking relaxation, recreation, and cultural enrichment. The park's most iconic features include the monumental Cascada (waterfall), a grand architectural structure with a triumphal arch, sculptures, and a large central fountain, partly designed by a young Antoni Gaudí. Visitors can rent rowboats for a leisurely paddle on the adjacent boating lake, a delightful activity especially on warm afternoons. The park is also home to the Barcelona Zoo, adding to its appeal for families. Beyond these attractions, Ciutadella Park houses the Parliament of Catalonia, the Museum of Natural Sciences (comprising several facilities within and adjacent to the park), and the Arc de Triomf stands at its entrance. Lush gardens, pathways, and picnic areas make it an ideal place for a stroll, a jog, or simply to unwind amidst nature. The park frequently hosts cultural events and street performers, adding to its lively atmosphere.
