About

Rikugi-en is a traditional Japanese garden in Tokyo, built around 1700 by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, a samurai feudal lord and close associate of the fifth Tokugawa shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. Its name translates to 'Garden of the Six Principles of Poetry,' reflecting its design which incorporates 88 miniature scenes from famous poems. The garden features a large central pond, man-made hills, and extensive walking paths that meticulously recreate landscapes inspired by classical Japanese and Chinese literature. Visitors can spend a peaceful time strolling through its diverse scenery, enjoying seasonal beauty like cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant autumn leaves. Rikugi-en is considered one of Tokyo's two most beautiful traditional gardens along with Koishikawa Koraku-en.
