About

Rossio Square, officially Praça de D. Pedro IV, has been one of Lisbon's main squares and a focal point of public life since the Middle Ages. Located in the Baixa district, it has witnessed countless historical events, public celebrations, and rebellions throughout the centuries. The square is instantly recognizable by its iconic wave-patterned mosaic pavement, which creates a mesmerizing optical illusion, and its two ornate Baroque fountains. At its center stands a statue of King Pedro IV, adorning a tall column. Surrounded by elegant 18th-century buildings, including the National Theatre D. Maria II, and a variety of traditional cafes and shops, Rossio remains a bustling hub. It's a perfect spot to relax, people-watch, and absorb the city's atmosphere, serving as a popular meeting point and a gateway to exploring the surrounding historic areas of Lisbon.
