About

Ryogoku Kokugikan is the iconic national sumo hall of Japan, located in the Ryogoku district of Tokyo. It is most famous for hosting three of the six annual Grand Sumo Tournaments (basho) in January, May, and September. During these tournaments, the atmosphere is electric, and it's an incredible opportunity to witness the traditional sport of sumo. Beyond the tournaments, the Kokugikan also houses a small but informative Sumo Museum. The museum features various artifacts, historical documents, and photographs related to the sport, providing insight into its rich history and cultural significance. Access to the museum is often free on non-tournament days, but it's always best to check their schedule. Even when no events are taking place, the sheer scale and architectural grandeur of the Kokugikan are impressive. Visitors can admire the building's exterior and soak in the ambiance of a neighborhood deeply rooted in sumo culture, with many sumo stables (heya) located nearby. Check the official website for event schedules and museum operating hours.
