About

The Santa Justa Lift, officially Elevador de Santa Justa, is an iconic wrought-iron elevator that stands as a stunning example of industrial-age engineering and neo-Gothic artistry. Designed by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, an apprentice of Gustave Eiffel, it was inaugurated in 1902 and originally powered by a steam engine. This historic landmark connects the lower streets of Baixa to the higher Largo do Carmo (Carmo Square), offering a practical link between the two districts while also serving as a major tourist attraction. The intricate ironwork and elegant design make it a standout feature in Lisbon's skyline. From the top, visitors are treated to breathtaking panoramic views over the rooftops of Baixa, Rossio Square, São Jorge Castle, and the Tagus River. While many opt for the ride, the top platform can also be accessed via a walk through Carmo Square, offering a different perspective of this remarkable structure.
