About

The Selarón Steps are a vibrant, colorful staircase in the Lapa neighborhood, created by Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón. He began renovating the dilapidated steps in 1990, covering them with over 2000 tiles collected from over 60 countries around the world. The steps are a living work of art that became a tribute to the Brazilian people and a popular tourist attraction.
