About

St. George's Basilica is the oldest surviving church within Prague Castle, a beautiful and historically significant example of Romanesque architecture. Founded around 920 AD by Prince Vratislav I, it was subsequently expanded and rebuilt, with its current appearance largely dating from the late 10th and early 11th centuries. The basilica features a distinctive red Baroque facade that was added in the 17th century, yet much of its Romanesque interior remains intact. The basilica houses the tombs of several Bohemian rulers and saints, including St. Ludmila, the grandmother of St. Wenceslas. Its serene and somewhat austere interior, with its heavy stone walls and high arches, offers a striking contrast to the more flamboyant Gothic and Baroque churches in Prague Castle, providing a tangible link to the city's early medieval history.
