The Intan

The Intan is not a typical museum; it's a private Peranakan home museum that offers an intimate and authentic insight into the rich Peranakan culture. Owned by Mr. Alvin Yapp, this award-winning heritage house is a labor of love, filled with a vast and meticulously curated collection of Peranakan antiques and artifacts. A visit to The Intan is an immersive experience. Guests are welcomed into Mr. Yapp's home, where he personally shares stories and explanations about each item, from elaborate beaded slippers and intricate porcelain to traditional costumes and furniture. It provides a deeper understanding of the unique fusion culture of the Peranakans, descendants of early Chinese immigrants who intermarried with local Malay women. Because it is a private residence, visits are strictly by appointment only and often include tea or a traditional Peranakan meal, making it a highly personalized and memorable cultural encounter.
