Akrotiri Archaeological Site

The Akrotiri Archaeological Site on Santorini is one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean. This ancient Minoan city was buried by an enormous volcanic eruption around 1600 BC, preserving it remarkably well under layers of volcanic ash, much like Pompeii. The site offers a fascinating glimpse into daily life in the Bronze Age. Visitors can walk through a sophisticated urban center with multi-story buildings, advanced drainage systems, and beautifully preserved frescoes that depict scenes of daily life, nature, and distant lands. Excavations began in 1967 and have since uncovered an extensive network of streets, squares, and houses, revealing a highly developed society with strong trade connections. The site is covered by a bioclimatic roof, protecting it from the elements and ensuring a comfortable visit.
