Archaeological Park

The Archaeological Park, more commonly known as Sultanahmet Square (or the Hippodrome of Constantinople), lies in the heart of Istanbul's historic peninsula. This large public space was once the site of the Byzantine Empire's grand Hippodrome, a massive arena used for chariot races, gladiatorial games, and public ceremonies. Though the original structure was largely dismantled over centuries, its outline is still visible, and several key monuments remain. Today, the park is a popular gathering spot surrounded by major attractions like the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. Within its bounds stand ancient treasures: the Egyptian Obelisk of Thutmose III, brought from Karnak; the Serpent Column, from the Temple of Apollo at Delphi; and the Walled Obelisk. These monuments offer silent testament to the city's continuous history, from its classical origins through its Byzantine and Ottoman eras, providing a free and accessible open-air history lesson.
