About

The Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls (Basilica Papale di San Paolo fuori le Mura) is one of Rome's four major papal basilicas and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is believed to house the tomb of Saint Paul the Apostle, making it a pivotal pilgrimage destination. Originally founded by Emperor Constantine over the traditional burial place of Saint Paul, the current impressive basilica was rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1823. Its vast interior, with its forest of columns and gleaming gold mosaics, creates a sense of immense grandeur and spiritual awe. A unique feature of the basilica is the series of papal portraits encircling the nave, believed to represent every pope from Saint Peter to the present day. The adjacent exquisite medieval cloister, with its intricate mosaic decoration and peaceful garden, is one of the most beautiful in Rome and offers a serene space for reflection, rounding out a visit to this significant religious and architectural marvel.
