About

The Bocca della Verità, or 'Mouth of Truth', is an iconic marble mask located in the portico of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin church in Rome. Legend has it that if a liar places their hand into the mouth, it will be bitten off. This ancient artifact attracts countless visitors eager to test the legend for themselves. While its exact origin and purpose are debated, the mask is believed to depict the ancient Roman sea god Oceanus. Some theories suggest it was once a drain cover or part of a fountain. Regardless of its original function, it gained its legendary status in the Middle Ages. Today, visitors can queue up for a chance to put their hand in the Bocca della Verità, often posing for memorable photographs. It has featured in numerous films and cultural references, most notably in the romantic comedy "Roman Holiday" starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck, which further cemented its place as a must-see Roman attraction.
