Charles Square

Charles Square, known locally as Karlovo náměstí, is one of the largest squares in the world and historically one of the most important public spaces in Prague. Established in 1348 by Emperor Charles IV, it was originally designed as the central marketplace of the New Town and was significantly larger than the Old Town Square. Today, the square serves as a bustling urban park, a transport hub, and home to several significant buildings. Notable structures include the New Town Hall, where the first defenestration of Prague occurred in 1419, and the Baroque Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. The square has undergone numerous transformations over centuries, from a livestock market to a verdant park, yet it retains its fundamental historical layout and significance. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the park, admire the various monuments and fountains, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere. The square is also a major tram and metro interchange, making it easily accessible and a convenient starting point for exploring other parts of Prague.
