About

Piazza dei Cinquecento is a large and busy square situated directly in front of Termini Station, Rome's main railway hub. The square is predominantly a transportation nexus, serving as a crucial point for connecting trains, buses, and the metro across the city. The square's name, 'Cinquecento,' refers to the 'five hundred' Italian soldiers who died at the Battle of Dogali in Eritrea in 1887. A monument to these fallen soldiers, an obelisk brought from Ethiopia, stands in the center of the piazza. While primarily a functional space, it holds historical significance related to Italy's colonial past. While not a typical tourist attraction in terms of sightseeing, it's an unavoidable entry point for many visitors arriving in Rome. It serves as a reminder of the city's complex history and its role as a modern European capital.
