About

Housed in the Palazzo Spada, this captivating museum offers a journey into Baroque art and architecture. The collection features works by prominent 17th-century artists such as Guido Reni, Guercino, Orazio Gentileschi, and Mattia Preti, among others. Visitors can admire exquisite paintings, sculptures, and furnishings that provide a glimpse into the lavish world of the Roman aristocracy. The undeniable highlight of the Galleria Spada is Borromini's Perspective Gallery. Created by Francesco Borromini in 1653, this ingenious architectural trompe l'oeil uses a clever arrangement of columns and a rising floor to create an illusion of profound depth in a relatively short space. What appears to be a 37-meter long colonnade is, in reality, only 8.82 meters long. A small statue at the end, seemingly life-size, is in fact only 60 centimeters tall. The gallery is situated in the historic Regola district of Rome, near the Tiber River. Beyond the celebrated perspective gallery, the Palazzo itself boasts beautiful courtyards and intricate architectural details that are worth exploring. It provides a more intimate and less crowded museum experience compared to some of Rome's larger institutions.
