Néa Kaméni (Volcano)

Néa Kaméni is a young volcanic island located in the center of the Santorini caldera in Greece. Formed over the past 450 years through various eruptions, it is still an active volcano, though currently dormant. The landscape is stark and impressive, characterized by black and reddish rocks, scattered small craters, and steam vents (fumaroles). Visitors can explore the island via a well-marked path that leads to the summit, offering panoramic views of the caldera and the surrounding islands of Santorini and Thirassia. The hike, while not overly strenuous, involves walking on uneven volcanic terrain. Due to the lack of shade, it is highly recommended to visit with appropriate footwear, sun protection, and water. Access to Néa Kaméni is exclusively by boat tours, which typically depart from the main ports of Santorini (Fira, Athinios, Ammoudi) and often combine the visit with a stop at the hot springs of Palea Kameni. A small entrance fee is charged upon arrival at the island, contributing to its maintenance and conservation.
