Plaza Mayor

Plaza Mayor is one of Madrid's most iconic and historically significant public squares. Built during the Hapsburg period, it officially opened in 1619 and has since served as a central hub for countless public events, from bullfights and coronations to markets and inquisitorial trials. The grand rectangular square is enclosed by uniform three-story residential buildings with 237 balconies facing inwards, all adorned uniformly with iron grilles and red frescoes. At its center stands the bronze equestrian statue of King Philip III, dating back to 1616. Today, Plaza Mayor remains a vibrant gathering place, bustling with tourists and locals.
