About

The Powder Tower, or Powder Gate, is one of the original city gates of Prague and a prominent Gothic tower. It stands as a monumental entrance to the Old Town, separating it from the New Town, and marks the beginning of the Royal Route, the coronation path of Czech kings. Its construction began in 1475, and it served as a gunpowder storage facility in the 17th century, hence its name. Visitors can climb the 186 steps to the observation deck, which offers a unique perspective on the city's architecture, including views of the Municipal House right next door, and the bustling streets below. The tower's dark, soot-covered appearance (from which it also derives its name) adds to its historical charm, making it a compelling landmark to explore.
