Rumeli Fortress

Rumeli Fortress, or Rumeli Hisarı, is a magnificent medieval fortress situated on the European shore of the Bosphorus, at its narrowest point. Commissioned by Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II ('the Conqueror') and completed in just four months in 1452, it played a crucial role in the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople. Its strategic location allowed the Ottomans to control maritime traffic through the Bosphorus, effectively cutting off the Byzantine capital from naval aid. The fortress complex consists of three large towers, thirteen small watchtowers, and connecting walls, forming an impressive silhouette against the Bosphorus. Visitors can explore the well-preserved battlements and towers, enjoying panoramic views across the strait to the Asian side. Today, Rumeli Hisarı also hosts an open-air museum and occasionally cultural events, offering a powerful reminder of Istanbul's strategic importance and the sultan's military prowess.
