About

Santa Maria della Vittoria is a small but incredibly significant Baroque church in Rome, primarily famous for housing Gian Lorenzo Bernini's masterpiece, 'The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa.' This dramatic and emotionally charged sculpture is considered one of the defining works of the High Baroque period. 'The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa' is situated in the Cornaro Chapel and depicts an angel piercing the heart of Saint Teresa of Ávila with a fiery dart, symbolizing divine love. Bernini masterfully combines sculpture, architecture, painting, and natural light to create a theatrical and intensely moving scene, with hidden windows illuminating the work from above. The entire chapel is designed as a stage, with sculpted figures of the Cornaro family observing the scene from what appear to be opera boxes. The church itself, with its ornate decoration and vibrant frescoes, serves as a fitting setting for such an iconic artwork, making it an essential visit for anyone interested in Baroque art and its profound emotional impact.
