Suleymaniye Mosque

The Süleymaniye Mosque is an imperial Ottoman mosque located on the Third Hill of Istanbul, Turkey. It is the second-largest mosque in the city and one of the best-known sights of Istanbul. Commissioned by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and designed by the imperial architect Mimar Sinan, the mosque's construction spanned from 1550 to 1557. Regarded as Sinan's masterpiece, the mosque is an embodiment of classical Ottoman architecture, showcasing perfect proportions, grand domes, and slender minarets. Its interior is spacious and filled with light, designed for a sense of serenity and spiritual reflection. The complex also includes a hospital, madrasa (religious schools), a public bath, a caravanserai, a kitchen, and a library. Beyond its architectural beauty, the mosque offers stunning panoramic views of the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus, especially from its terraced gardens. It also houses the tomb of Sultan Suleiman and his wife Roxelana, as well as Mimar Sinan himself.
