About

The House of Wonders, or Beit al-Ajaib, is one of Stone Town's most iconic buildings. Once a ceremonial palace built by Sultan Barghash in 1883, it was the first building in Zanzibar to have electricity and an elevator, hence its name. It served as a landmark symbol of modernity for its time. Historically, the palace was used for official functions and celebrations, showcasing the Sultan's power and prosperity. Its grand architecture and prominent location overlooking the sea made it a focal point of Stone Town. Though partially collapsed in 2020 and currently undergoing extensive restoration, it remains a powerful symbol of Zanzibar's royal history and architectural ambition. Visitors can still admire its exterior and appreciate its historical significance.
