About

The Old Fort, also known as Ngome Kongwe, is the oldest building in Stone Town. Built by the Omani Arabs after expelling the Portuguese in 1698, it served as a defense against future European invasions and later as a prison and an execution ground. Its massive stone walls and battlements reflect its military origins. Today, the fort has been transformed into a vibrant cultural hub. Inside, you'll find an open-air amphitheater that hosts various cultural performances, including music and dance. The fort also houses a number of craft shops where local artisans sell their wares, a small art gallery, and a tourist information desk. It's a great place to soak in history while experiencing contemporary Zanzibari culture.
