About

The Maruhubi Palace Ruins are the atmospheric remains of a grand palace built by Sultan Barghash in 1882. Located approximately four kilometers north of Stone Town, it was intended to house his many wives and concubines, symbolizing the immense wealth and power of the Sultan during that era. Although much of the palace was destroyed by fire in 1899, the remaining stone arches, grand columns, and a large bathhouse still convey a sense of its former magnificence. The ruins are set within a beautiful garden, featuring lily ponds and ancient trees, creating a poignant and serene atmosphere. Exploring the Maruhubi Palace Ruins offers a tangible connection to Zanzibar's royal past and the opulent lifestyles of its rulers. It's a site of both historical significance and architectural beauty, providing a peaceful retreat from the bustling town.
