About

Prison Island, officially known as Changuu Island, is a small island located just a short boat ride from Stone Town. Despite its name, it was never actually used as a prison but rather as a quarantine station for yellow fever patients in the late 19th century. The island is most famous for being home to a sanctuary for Aldabra giant tortoises, which were originally brought from the Seychelles. Visitors can get up close with these ancient creatures, feed them, and learn about their conservation efforts. Some tortoises are over 100 years old. In addition to the tortoises, the island offers opportunities for swimming and snorkeling in the surrounding clear turquoise waters. You can also explore the historic prison ruins, which provide a glimpse into the island's intriguing past. It's a perfect half-day trip.
